First and foremost, this is a collection of things that I want to tell my children. A record of advice, thoughts and miscellany for them.
Secondly, this is a self-improvement/personal development project.
I recognize that there are a lot of areas where I need to improve.
I need to improve to better serve my wife and my family.
When I first conceived of this site, it focused entirely on raising my boys to be men. But then I realized it also was about helping other guys become men as well.
As in, a rising tide lifts all boats.
Does the world really need another masculinity blog?
I would say, yes!
It seems that masculinity is under attack from many angles in our society.
Men are encouraged to set aside their masculinity, told that it is “toxic”… Unless it is convenient. Then they can be manly all they want.
Men are told to stop being manly, then blamed for not growing up when they decide not to participate in higher education, certain career fields, marriage, etc, even though all these are basically minefields they would be stepping in.
This doesn’t excuse men though.
One of the biggest problems that men face is giving up their sovereignty.
Sovereignty, in this case, is essentially the ability to govern or control oneself.
When men allow family, women or society to control them, they surrender their sovereignty.
My wife and I have 2 sons and a daughter and I fear for their futures if gender roles become so confused that they don’t understand what they are supposed to do.
I don’t want my sons or daughter to surrender their sovereignty.
So this blog will follow me and my thoughts as I work through how to model masculinity for them.
Once again, I don’t have it all figured out. Not by a long shot, but I’m committed to taking back my sovereignty and getting better a little bit each day.
We’ll look at self-improvement, relationships, parenting, fitness, self-directed education, faith and anything else that seems relevant.
I welcome your comments or questions as we proceed along this journey.
